About a week or so ago I posted a stunning shot of an unidentified model photographed by Michael Anthony Downs. I believe at the time I referred to it as a 'surreal shot worthy of being called a work of art'... or something paraphrased along those lines...
Well apparently I wasn't crazy or totally off-base ... considering the model in that shot turned out to be absolutely gorgeous all-around. His name is Nick M. and he was revealed a few days ago as the latest addition to the fantastic All American Guys roster (as if they didn't have enough gorgeous guys).
According to his profile, Nick is 18 years old and from the beautiful sunshine state of Florida. He's currently in college for business, loves surfing, and plays the guitar and drums with a band local to his area. So essentially he loves to rock out and looks super, super hot without a shirt on... already two pluses in my book. You can check out much more of beautiful Nick over at AAG.
I'm kinda getting nauseated over the ga-ga over Mike Downs and his numerous companies he run or is the head of. ANY one can take a great photo. When you have gorgeous male models, thats when the photo really stands out. I'm sorry but, a photographer is NOTHING without the model. I don't care at what level of photography a person is, it all comes down to the model. A different photographer could take the same or similar photo and you'd be all impressed and glorifying him or her. There are PLENTY of other photographers out there to choose from in stead of hanging on to Mike Downs as you have here. Hes not all that hes cracked up to be personally. Try looking at strengthnet.com for examples of other male models who happen to have some excellent photos taken of them. Shoot...for that fact, one could go to ModelMayhem.com and look up NUMEROUS photographers with male models. However, be cautious if you post anything here from their as MANY photographers require direct permission and... who can blame them from the personal photographers sites there. Anyways, lets get past MAD...OK?

Well MacGriogair, agreed that there are other photographers. But Michael Downs happens to be one of the best. And you should know it's not that easy to reach that position where you get gorgeous looking models to have photo shoot. Michael has got real talent, accept that. And that also doesn't mean he is the only one.

I don't have any problem highlighting other photographers, I've done so plenty of times regarding photographers with different skills.
Talent is talent though :-) I do believe there are a number of photographers who could take similarly fantastic photos (especially with reference to some of the ones I've highlighted thus far on this blog)... but I don't believe just 'any' photographer can get up in the morning and take these kind of shots. There is some skill involved after all ^_^
But yeah, there are still quite a few brilliant photographers who I have plans on celebrating so don't worry, I'll be moving on soon enough :-)
Hey Crazy Sam- People believe him to be "one the best" as you state because thats what people see. If he was compared with other photographers or same or greater "skill", I think folks would see there are others. As far as your second sentence,. I do have to laugh, forgive me. Yes,Mr.Downs and I have a history alright. As i said, he hasn't always been the most upfront or honest person to deal with but, perhaps that comes with his territory and thinking he is the greatest.He doesn't even edit the majority of his work. Others do for final product! He does have a small staff you know. Also Sam as you proved my point also, it DOES help when you have the right model and good looks. Yes, Mike IS good but, hes NOT the cats' meow or the end all.If one wants to clamor at his work, just think of those that made Mike look that good as a photographer. Special lighting, effects etc.. Its not all his doing. I've known him briefly on a personal/professional side.He makes things sound good and look good. After you get backstabbed, you look back at things that were stated or done and realize how unprofessional he really is. Just one example. I was on a shoot with him as he was shooting a model at his old place. He was doing a webvid and taking some shots as well. His "assistant" and webperson came through the door towards the end of this. Mind you, the model was nude and his back side facing us and the webcam. This assistant came in just as the webcam had been turned off and all he could say was, "Look at the naked guy. Look at the naked guy." with a huge grin on his face and perhaps some drool out the side of his mouth.He would not stop staring or going on. I felt extremely bad for the model as I could tell the model felt uncomfortable about that moment. I felt embarrassed for the model. Did Mike say or do anything to stop this? NO! He let it go on and that, was extremely unprofessional and rude! Did the assistant apologize? Not a chance! DISRESPECTFUL INDEED! Did Mike apologize for the behavior of his assistant? NEVER. This is just ONE incident. So yes, when I see someone receive high praise for their work be it in photography or something else, and I happen to know a different side, I'm going to say something. I've been real good about restraining myself about Mr.Downs. I just hope that someone more dutifully deserving and honorable will get their recognition that is due them and not someone who sees themselves as a glorified professional.
Eric- yes,I give you credit here. I know some time ago you actually had listed some of your fave photographers and as I recall it was nice lengthy list. You asked if I had someone in mind? No, not in particular. Again, seeing all the fantastic photographers from ModelMayhem and Modelcoast, which are model,photographer,agent,company websites to connect a model with said list, I know for a fact that some are of the same "talent" or far surpass MAD. I use to keep a lengthy list of photographers as well. I'll take time here soon and see if I can't locate that. I agree that some...talent is needed or just a great eye. Also as I stated, Mike hardly does his own personal editing. His staff does but he gets the credit. Those who scout, shoot and edit their own photography I give a huge BRAVO to. As I said also, Mike is good but, he doesn't deserve the pedestal that he has been placed on.
I agree. This guy Pa`druig MacGriogair is a big bag of wind who doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to photography. Nothing more needs to be said than that.
Judging from all that's been said thus far I think the issue here cuts a little deeper than just the photography involved. I'm not even begin to try to attempt to jump in a dispute between a photographer and a former staff/(perhaps maybe model).
Suffice to say I don't think Michael Downs' photgraphic eye can be so readily dismissed (keep in mind after all he also shoots women and those look aesthetically perfect as well).
I can't... or maybe better put:-) i won't really comment on personal issues seeing as that's a matter far, far removed from what I'm intending on highlighting here.
Good Morning- I just wanted to comment back to you in response. All I said is true. A few back I was a scout for AAG, College Muscle,..short lived. I flew with a model I had scouted from Ohio and these were just some of the antics that took place. Your also dismissing his team which you never hear of. That is wrong! I have NOT spoken of this incident in a few years. I'm just sick and tired of everyone thinking he is the end all of photography and some of his ethics stink! But, if you wish to continue to support and back him, that your thing. Not mine. i'm sorry people can't open their eyes and realize there is more to this that what is seen on the outside when it comes to MADs' photography.

I too know photography.Been in the field for almost 20 years now come June.I've gone from color and b/w film and knowing how to develope it, to modern digital and using Adobe, Corel and other programs used for editing. I used Sony and Canon cameras just like MAD. I know the same manual settings and techniques for the Canon. Now I've recently switched to Olympus though. I didn't say the photos are not great as you have assumed and asserted. By the way, you should look and see what the word assume mean. ASS-U-ME.IF you'd like to have an open discussion off here in regards to photography and photographic techniques, I'll challenge you to it. So "hot air"? I don't think so! It's the comments that you two leave that will bring on a written fight here. my comments were not intended to spear a fight. It is to inform and try to explain..THERE ARE OTHERS guys. So "get over it"!

I work with Michael Downs and periodically browse the web to check on his work, and lo and behold I come across this. I told Michael about this incident, considering this guy (MacGriogair) is bordering on defamation. Michael was amused to hear about this but was able to clarify what's going on here, based on the clues this guy has left behind (webvideo, assistant seeing model nude and scout from Ohio...Michael has only employed one scout from Ohio)
The real reason this person is so livid with Michael is very simple. The model (who shall remain nameless) stopped working with this scout/photographer MacGriogair shortly after he began working with Michael because it was revealed that the scout/photographer was being "creepy" with the model and made him very uncomfortable and was constantly attempting to make him do nudity beyond his comfort level.
It wasn't Michael's fault that made the model stop making contact with this scout/photographer, but this person apparently made the assumption that Michael "stole" his model and has rushed to judgement on Michael. When in fact it was his own doing that led the model to shy away.
So it all breaks down to jealousy and anger over the loss of his contact. Michael has also indicated that the incident in question regarding the assistant seeing the model nude was completely blown out of proportion, and in fact was an innocent playful moment that the model had no issues with. If he had issues being naked, he wouldn't have posed for artistic nudes with Michael D. and assistants.
It should further be noted that if said person continues to defame or attempt to defame the character of Michael on-line, he will be met with swift legal action, since we are fully aware of who this is. This is for the public record.

I work with Michael Downs and periodically browse the web to check on his work, and lo and behold I come across this. I told Michael about this incident, considering this guy (MacGriogair) is bordering on defamation. Michael was amused to hear about this but was able to clarify what's going on here, based on the clues this guy has left behind (webvideo, assistant seeing model nude and scout from Ohio...Michael has only employed one scout from Ohio)
The real reason this person is so livid with Michael is very simple. The model (who shall remain nameless) stopped working with this scout/photographer MacGriogair shortly after he began working with Michael because it was revealed that the scout/photographer was being "creepy" with the model and made him very uncomfortable and was constantly attempting to make him do nudity beyond his comfort level.
It wasn't Michael's fault that made the model stop making contact with this scout/photographer, but this person apparently made the assumption that Michael "stole" his model and has rushed to judgement on Michael. When in fact it was his own doing that led the model to shy away.
So it all breaks down to jealousy and anger over the loss of his contact. Michael has also indicated that the incident in question regarding the assistant seeing the model nude was completely blown out of proportion, and in fact was an innocent playful moment that the model had no issues with. If he had issues being naked, he wouldn't have posed for artistic nudes with Michael D. and assistants.
It should further be noted that if said person continues to defame or attempt to defame the character of Michael on-line, he will be met with swift legal action, since we are fully aware of who this is. This is for the public record.
